A dowry is a gift of property the bride's family provides for her on the occasion of her wedding. In the case of a freedwoman, frequently the patron who manumitted her would provide a dowry. In this case, it would not be appropriate for Pullo to provide a dowry for his own bride. However, because of the special and important nature of these nuptials, the people of Rome wish to gift the bride with a bag of coins containing thirty two of these:
