Lupus Kills Parmenion and Escapes
Army Mutinies
In an act of incredible selfless bravery, Quintus Manlius Lupus managed to
enter the city of Ambracia, remain undetected and kill the Epiran Regent, Parmenion.
The assassination, which was witnessed by a sole guard, who ran away, lead
to a revolt within the ranks of the Epiran army in Ambracia.
After a bout of blood letting and suicides by Parmenion’s supporters,
the rest of the army sent a message declaring loyalty to King Alexander to
the Roman forces outside the city and agreed to allow a Roman delegation into
the city. On his return to camp, Lupus himself was greeted proud admiration
and disbelief by the men of his legion, who when they realised that the fortified
city filled with thousands of Epiran troops would not now have to be assaulted,
promptly made the Tribunus Prolegato a grass crown and carried him aloft through
the castra. With the main Epiran army at Ambracia now neutralised and the leader
of the revolt killed, it seems a fair bet that the remainder of the country
will quickly follow suit as soon as it hears of Parmenion’s death and
sees Rome’s glorious troops marching through.
All legions in Epirus receive a morale bonus which takes them to 1.0 or Excellent.
Riots hit Rome
Due to some indiscriminately high spending by Decimus Claudius Russus, Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, Lucius Iulius Caesar, Lucius Valerius Flaccus, Decimus Junius Pompeius, Patricus Curius Hibernicus and Publius Attius Varus in temple, private and villa expenses without any corresponding spending in public works, class riots broke out in Rome this month. After the rioters calmed down and went home the damage to Rome included damage to the following domus: ATA (3,900D worth of damage), NLT (125D), PMT (8,610D), QML (365D) and the biggest damage was caused to the home of CLN (93,750D).
“These men are either irresponsible or fools, either way they won’t be getting a saturnalia gift from me or my vote any time soon”, said a very angry Numidicus.
No troops may be raised this month and revenue from all sources except plunder and booty is HALVED for the November turn.
Sisenna Crushes Egyptian Force at Apollonia!
It’s war Quirites, and we didn’t even know it! General Cnaeus
Ulpius Sisenna took matters into his own hands last month when he not only
allied himself with the Cyrenians, without so much as a by-your-leave to the
SPQR, but then he proceeded to attack his former allied troops at Apollonia,
much to their surprise and dismay.
The battle was short and effective with the more than 16,000 man Roman and
Cyrenian force easily defeating the 6,400 man Egyptian force. 5,346 Egyptians
were killed, 61 fled and 993 prisoners of war were taken, less than hoped for,
as the Cyrenians proved somewhat more difficult to control in their bloodlust
against their former masters than the Roman legions did. 12,375D worth of booty
was taken, a huge amount which improved the shaky morale of the Roman legions
to 0.6.
CUS earns 1.51 command points and 16 Military action points for the battle.
Legions Defeated at Darnis!
Unlike Apollonia, Darnis was a different story. The two Roman legions made
a surprise attack on Darnis, as ordered by commander Sisenna, but despite the
element of substantial surprise and early gains, were unable to complete the
conquest of the city when the 25,000 man Egyptian army camped near the city
managed to join the fray in defence of the city garrison. The battle ended
in a tactical defeat for Rome, with legios XXVIII and XXIV losing 7,478 men
and the Egyptian forces losing 6,042.
The Roman survivors have fallen back to Apollonia,
where with a morale of 0.2 they are in ‘Panic’ status.
Darnis suffered damage to 53% of the city during the fighting.
CUS loses 1,43 command points and 15 Military action points.
Nicopolis Refuses to Reject Parmenion
The city of Nicopolis were not swayed by the presentation of the frail and
sickly King Alexander to them. They steadfastly refused to surrender or to
side with the King against their new leader, Parmenion. “Parmenion and
Greco-Macedonian unity is our future, not Roman stooges” was their reply.
NB: They don’t know anything about
Parmenion at this point.
Other News
Philip Rejects Wrongdoing
King Philip of Macedonia has rejected any involvement in the Epiran civil war.
He told Rome’s senatorial ambassadors that he had no links with Parmenion
and that reports that King Alexander had been initially held prisoner in
Apollonia come as a surprise to him. Philip has promised to summon the Apollonian
council for an explanation of this matter and said that he will root out
any bad apples. Philip reports that the major part of Greece is now quiet,
with the war there over with the exception of the Pergamese and Rhodian infestation
at Chalcis and that Greek forces, aided by Macedonia, are preparing a massed
army to expel the invaders. He says that he has signed peace and co-operation
agreements with the new Achaean League and that they, together with Thrace,
are working for a more peaceful and united Hellenic world, Asian interference
not withstanding.
When asked whether the current number of men he held under arms exceeded treaty
levels he replied sternly: “We must be permitted to protect ourselves
from these Asian sons of whore-mongers. Make them withdraw and we will return
to treaty levels.”
Pergamese and Rhodians Make Forays Into Macedonia
Skirmishing forces from the Perga-mese and Rhodian forces near Chalcis, having
pressed northwards to cover the minor towns and villages as far as Histiaea,
have launched an series of raids on the Macedonian mainland at Pteleum.
Macedonia has greeted Rome’s ambassadors, who were sent to question him
over the situation in Greece, with a strong condemnation of the Pergamese and
Rhodian attacks and has formally asked Rome to intervene to prevent the two,
who are also allies of Rome, from waging war on a fellow Roman allied country.
He threatened that if Rome did not do so, he wold be forced to declare war
on the two in violation of his treaty with Rome.
Seleucid Troop Build up Reported
Reports have reached Rome of mobilisation of men in Seleucid controlled areas.
The reports are sketchy at best and so far these forces have not been seen
to be marching anywhere.
Ptolomeic ‘Heir’ Smuggled to Rome
An apparent ‘heir’ to the Ptolomeic line has been persuaded to
return to Rome by agents acting on behalf of Gn. Manlius Vulso.
The man, who is a cousin of the current King is rumoured to be the bastard
child of King Ptolomy and is known as Ptolomianis. 24 years of age he is spoilt,
incredibly stupid and vain; a typical Egyptian in fact, he is nevertheless
not considered to be in the line of succession by the Egyptian court.
German Horde Heads Southwest
The German horde has left Avaricum and has head south west to Vesunna, not
far from the site of their battle with the Gauls at Uxellodunum.
Army of Aquitanian Gauls Arrive at Tolosa
An army of 25,000 Aquitanian and long-hairded Gauls have arrived at Tolosa
and have lifted the blockade of Tolosa by forcing the road blocks to withdraw.
A statement from the King has given Tacitus and his men two days to leave
Volcae lands or face attack.
City News
Fabius Finds His Fingers
Caius Fabius’ appeal for the re-growth of his fingers has naturally not
resulted in the re-growth of the severed digits but it has led to a man coming
forward with a special leather prosthesis that replaces the cleaved off lower
half of the hand with leather replacements which can be used to hold a shield
more securely. The bright inventor has reportedly even offered him a dress
version which has a gold plated exterior. It is rumoured that Publius Claudius
Nero is considering asking the man for a similar solution for his missing gonad.
No Sign of Cnaeus Gnaeus
Despite searching high and low, no sign of Cnaeus Gnaues, dead or alive has
been found within Salonae. It is said that the men of legio XXI left no bar
stool standing and no pillow un-slept on in their search to establish the
identities of the four headless corpses. The rumour that the man left Illyria
aboard an Italian bound ship has however gathered further adherents.
Cordatus Glued to Seat
It is said that Drakus Domitius Cordatus has grown so accustomed to his role
as PontifexMaximus that he will be standing for the office in perpetuity.
It is rumoured that his decision to stand again has scared off more than
one distinguished candidate, but was not enough to prevent Marcus Fulvius
Sesquiculum from declaring his candidature. “Free confirmation
sacrifices to everyone who votes for me!” he said before adding that he felt sure
that “there weren’t enough dickheads in Rome prepared to vote
for Cordatus again.”
Sources close to Cordatus allege that the big man replied: “My opponents
are all political delinquents and I invite Romans to vote for me, after all,
I am like a big, cheap pork sausage that tastes better than it looks...”
If the insults are anything to go by, this promises to be a bitterly fought
election campaign.
Tribune Deaths
Latriclavian tribune, Marcus Apuleius Faustus was found dead in his tent in
Narbonensis this morning. His naked body, showed signs of a savage beating
and a large quantity of Greek pornographic literature was found in his scroll
cases. Meanwhile in Epirus Lat. Tribune Servius Gabinius Sempronius was followed
by scouts returning to camp after a secret assignation with Epiran enemy
forces. Uncovered as a spy, the shamed tribune killed himself.
Prodigia
None has been reported this month.
