Is it just me, or are filtration systems more delicate than they used to be?

I remember my grandfather (who had an entire pet store worth of platys, goldfish, and guppies!) would use the old-fashioned kind of filter floss-n-charcoal filters for seemingly years.

I don't know if the new filters work better, but I seem to go through one every year or two!
