    Thanks, Livia, for pulling together so much information about this man, whose letter to Cicero after Caesar's death is, IMHO, the most heart-felt personal emotion still extant from that time of fraught emotion.

    One thing did surprise me - you note that Matius was born c. 84 BC, which means that he would have been nearly 16 years younger than Caesar. For some reason, I thought they were closer in age. Thus when Caesar would have been at the height of his powers in Gaul, Matius would have been in his early '30's and a perfect age both to learn from a master and to follow him aftewards.
