Millions, literally millions of people use quicktime every day with no problems at all. It's a staple item for ipod/itunes users --- and we KNOW how many of THEM there are --- not to mention the cutting edge in compression technology. A half an hour of video that takes up no more than 30 megabytes (compare that with about 200 megs for divX) is now possible with apple's H.264 compression. Simply unbelievable.
If quicktime is screwing up your system, then I suggest that you get in touch with the support area of apple.com and explain your problem. More than likely there is another program like realplayer competing with quicktime to stream data on your system, and the whole shebang is locking up. Doesn't happen often, but I've seen more bizarre things.
Instead of trying to keep quicktime off your system, try to find the conflict it has, fix it and keep quicktime ON your system. I promise you won't be disappointed.
