    -----------------------------------------------------------------

It was a perfect day for the races. The sun was directly overhead providing the warmth to offset the oncoming fall chill. The track was perfectly groomed. As the teams came out for the traditional parade around the ring, there seemed to be a somber attitude about the drivers. The tone was set by Constant. He was in need of a finish to keep up with Sutor in the standings. The younger drivers could feel he tension and felt a tremor of fear about being in his way. They hoped he might drive his team too hard leaving an opening for them to make a dash at the end.

Lined up and off to a clean start, the race was underway. The butterflies began to settle with most of the drivers, but the new man Porcus was still feeling unnerved going into the second lap. The flurry of top class horses, the pounding of the hooves, the immensity of the arena, the cracking of the whips, he couldn’t seem to get his wits about him. Losing control, he collided with Caius Badoerus. Although the expensive and mater crafted chariot was hardly scratched, Caius himself was not so fortunate. Losing balance and falling off his ride, his neck was broken instantly upon hitting the ground.

Overcorrecting for his error, Porcus found himself tangled up with Turbus next. Turbus was prepared and braced himself for the impact as he shouted insults. “You incompetent fool! Get off the track before you kill us all!” But the words fell on deaf ears. No sooner did Turbus begin cursing at Porcus than the wheels of the chariots locked. Something had to give. The snap of Maledicti’s axel was heard by all as if it was a clap of thunder. Porcus fell and met his death.

The crowd fell silent in respect of the valiant drivers now dead, but with every lap their interest began to increase and the volume grew with their anticipation of the finish. Constant held the lead most of the race. The question was whether or not he rode his team too hard to close the deal. A few lengths back were what was becoming to be the other regular contenders. Franko and Decimus were in the hunt. But coming up fastest on the outside was none other than the young man Turbus again. As Turbus closed in on the leader, Constant sneered back at him with a look of such contempt one could plainly understand what was on his mind. “Come a little closer boy and I’ll teach you a lesson.”
