The magistrates took their seats to the cheer of the crowd. Publius Manlius Torquatus entered first and esteemed guest and co-aedile in office. Moments behind him, Marcus Aemilius Lepidus made his entry as well. And then, at last, Marcus Ursus Longinus made his entrance into the arena. The applause was heartwarming, though none was sure if it was more because the well liked tribune of the Plebs had been of such poor health and recently attacked in his home, or if it was a fascination how this man of modest background stood on the threshold of a wedding to none other than the daughter of Cordatus. Now he sat in the booth and shook hands with his rival of the year before.
“You look well Longinus,” Lepidus opened up the dialog. Though one could assume that there were no hard feelings between the men as Lepidus had offered the race sponsorship to Longins, Torquatus was waiting to see how the two interacted before getting overly chatty.
“I feel well well,” replied Longinus still drinking in the support of the crowd. “Who do you favor in today’s races?”
“You know I will pick no favorites! I am impartial. Needless to say though, every odds maker has Sutor by far the man to beat today.”
Torquatus finally jumped in. “Slip Kids is a very experienced team. Don’t underestimate them though they have underachieved this year. I pray today isn’t the day they finally catch their stride again!”

The race was off. The pack of less experienced teams clustered in a heap to battle each other. Breaking away from them too late was Consulares, unable to bridge the gap the widening gap to the leaders that found themselves forming a pack of their own.
Going into the final lap, it was Slip Kids, Lotus, Viagra, and Fortunatus battling for the win. Hanging in close was also the underdog Absum.
