Well after midnight Antony stood in the shadows along the quay at the Tiber watching Cleopatra’s ship. There was a flurry of activity on board, sailors in the rigging setting sails, men running along the deck to and fro. It was all in silence.

So she was leaving in the dead of night, Antony thought. He did not want her to go. But he understood her reasons.

As final preparations were being made Cleopatra came on deck. She went to the railing of the ship and looked out over the city. Antony stepped out of the darkness and called to her. She was startled at first but when she recognized him she walked down the gang plank to meet him.

“I have brought some of the tenth legion to look after you. You have nothing to fear by staying.”

“My child and I are abandoned now by Caesar. Nothing to fear? That’s no reason for staying.”

“So much has happened so quickly, I feel as though I have the pieces of your broken world to pick up, and now you, running off like this…”

“Do you suggest that I stay? Why?”

“Don’t ask me to be clear about my feelings. I’m tired . And with you even at my best it is never easy to say my meaning.”

    Goodbye

“You spoke so well, this afternoon Antony.” For the first time a tone of anger and hurt entered her voice. “Tell me, did Caesar send you to be his lackey and soften the blow?”

“No, I came on my own accord. I didn’t want you to hear it from strangers. I was hopping that….”

Her voice was soft and enticing again. “In any case it’s over, Caesar and the dream. Murdered by a marriage proposal. Now over, finished.” She held out her hand to him and he took it in his tight grip.

“Not necessarily.” His hand locked about hers and she winced.

“You’re hurting me, that fist of iron.”

He relaxed his grip but continued to hold her hand. Apollodorous came up beside the Queen.

“The ship is ready, we have very little time.”

She nodded to him and then turned to smile at Antony.

“I must go home. There are no more Caesars for me to run to. ”

“There is always Antony.” He said.

She smiled again and held his eyes in her gaze. “I shall always remember your kindness to me.” She tried to let go of his hand but he held it tight.

    “You give up too easily.”

    “Do I?”

“Let me come to Alexandria and talk more with you….?”

“When ever you like.” She said amused by his whim.

    “Now, tonight if I could….”

Her smile was warm. “In any case, try to remember me now and then. Look after Caesar. Goodbye Antony.”

As she tried to step away he grabbed the scarf from her hand. She smiled and then boarded the ship.

She turned on deck to look at him, to give him a picture of her to remember. Antony slowly brought the scarf to his lips and kissed it as her ship faded into the swirling darkness of the night.
