As I pounded bread the next morning, the thought of Beran's words still haunted my mind:
"""Somewhere within this house is a book. It tells how to open another gate. I believe that my Ancient Enemy will try to get his claws on that book and to join forces with that Evil."""
Was this for real? Did exist such a book to bring forth such evil or was the whole thing a just an old tale?
My curious nature was creeping back, but I pushed it aside, telling myself to mind my duties (lest I were to be banished from the house like the others). Still, if such thing DID exist, wouldn't it be important for one of us to find it first???
In a completely unrelated trip to the library to swtich out my latest novel with something new, I discover the most curious thing- the large oak doors to the library are locked tightly shut!
"Who would have done this?" I ponder. I pulled with all my might but could not open them. Without hesitation, I move down to the kitchen exit to basement, making my way back to the catacombs. I snatch a torch from the wall to light my way.
There is a long passageway that leads "secretly" to the library directly from the catacombs (although I'm certain all of us living in the house know of it). I walk the long passage and then approach the steel door that secretly connects to the bookcase next to the fireplace, but this door too is locked. Sinking to my knees, I peer through the keyhole. Darkness. I poke my finger through and push off book from the shelf to the floor with a loud sound on the other side. I gaze again, curious as to who may be inside of the library. I see nobody, and frown.
"Oh well," I sigh, making my way back through the catacombs to return to the kitchen. So much for swapping out for a new book....
Suddenly I pause, slightly confused.
"If there was a book of such evil in the house like Beran says, wouldn't the people who placed it here avoid putting it in a room where people go to look for books?" I think aloud. Curious. I keep walking, returning the torch to it's post as I exit.
There are certain to be strange things are to come...
