Working with masks is something that is on my "to do" list. I did not realize you could do so many nifty things with them. I always visualized them working more along the lines of protecting a part of your image while you applied a style/transformation/etc. to another part of it. That graphic you made looks great, Lalita. And I am very impressed that you made those snowflakes by hand, Aria. I do not have the patience to tackle something like that. :)
I have recently become an addict of layer styles. I got some premade ones with a Photoshop CD that I purchased and once I started looking at how they are made, I am getting brave enough to learn how to make some of my own. The only thing I do not like about them, is that they don't respond to things like opacity and fade. Once you've applied the style, you cannot change the effect.
