The great mosaic depicting Alexander and
Darius in battle has returned to the House Of The Faun in Pompeii.
The mosaic floor, 18' by 9', far to valuable to lie exposed in situ,
has been laboriously duplicated by CISIM, The International Center
For The Study And Teaching Of Mosaic, and the duplicate placed in the
original location in the House Of The Faun in Pompeii.
Members of CISIM using natural colored indigenous marbles, have painstakingly
reproduced each of the two million individual tesserae and placed them
exactly as they are in the original which is now conserved in a museum
in Naples. The work has required two years of effort to complete.
It is expected that the mosaic will increase tourism in Pompeii which
is supported solely by tourists entrance fees.
There is a beautifully illustrated article in the Jan/ Feb issue of
Archaeology Magazine published by The Archeological Society Of America.
