Marius' Mules
In the late Republic, Gaius Marius implemented various reforms in the composition, organization, and equipment of the Roman army.
For one thing, to keep the baggage trains from becoming too large, Marius had each man carry as much of his own equipment as he could, including his own armor, weapons, and rations.
To make this easier, he issued each legionary a forked stick to carry the 50-60 pound load on his shoulder. The soldiers nicknamed these sticks Marius' Mules.
