I'm afraid that Appian is still my favorite for the Civil War, although he doesn't have those lovely touches of scandal or personal details that Plutarch or Suetonius does.

I like Suetonius, and have been told by a classics scholar that he is TOTALLY junk-worthy and that no one should believe a word he says. What say our members?

Tacitus gets on my nerves. Since I can't read him in original Latin (where he is supposedly a wonder in composition), I can only go by the hints he throws out, which mainly make me feel that he had little objectivity in going over the material. I know, I know, it's heresy. But I can't read Tacitus for FUN.

My own personal favorites are probably Caesar's own works - one just sets one's mental meter to weed out the self-justifications when possible.
