Xelajuj or Xelajuj juyub' means at the feet or below = Xe, ten = lajuj, mountains = juyub' and was the original K'iche' or Quiché name for Quetzaltenango. Quetzaltenango was the name given to Xelajuj by the Tlaxcalan or Mexica auxilary troops that helped Alvarado conquer the area. It is called the place of the Quetzal or Q'uq' in K'iche' because the war captain of Q'umarq'aj, Tecun Uman, transformed himself into a quetzal and smote off the head of Alvarado's horse during the great battle that occured in this valley, below the ten mountains. Excellent!!!! Chan Chan, it's your turn.
