Clodius like to work the the mobs alright. I remember while Pompey and Caesar and Crassus helped him, in order to use him as a tool he could bark back. Plutarch mentions about some nasy chorus that Clodius would shout at Pompey, and it implied that Pompey was sleeping with some young aristocaric boys. So, Clodius did some dirty actions in order to gain more popularity. And I don't think that Pompey was sleeping with any boy since Pompey really did prefer women and was happy married to Julia at the time.
