to reconcile myself to the great Caesar. I am not saying that Sulla or Pompey were perfect but there is something sinister about Caesar that I can't quite put my finger on. He seemed to combine an awesome eye for opportunism with an unscrupulous nature for self-promotion. His knowledge about state religion made him even more dangerous as he could find loopholes and exploit them. He put his own dignitas ahead of the Republic that he professed to love.
Surely if he had truly loved the Republic he would not have taken advantage of it during his consulship and not hidden his indiscretions behind his inviolability?
