SLEEP STEALER
I'd pawn a goldbrick for slumber
One slumbering wakeless night
A night of child's dreams, so sweet
Sweeter still to one grown older
An older dawn that always comes too soon.
So soon it arouses the sun
Sunshine in black, dreaming awake
I am awake from silent tainted visions
Such visions that mar the golden day
Days no peace can be found too soon.
As soon as the hour chimes once
This once would be so kind
The kind peace of dreamless sleep
My sleep drenched eyes know only the desert
A desert as dry as death happening too soon.
I'll sooner close these eyes there
Than there spend a wakeful moment in paradise,
Can paradise make the reverie sweet
Too sweet to remember the lies and deceits
Deceitful art binding a heart that opened too soon?
