Plate tectonics are an interesting subject to study and in understanding the actions taking place below the earth's surface we may find out a lot more about geo-politics. The Alpes are formed due to Italy being pushed into Europe and folding. Some areas are known for volcanic activity, Stromboli, Vesuvius and Etna for example. Although you wouldn't expect volcanic eruptions in Northen Italy you may well expect earthquakes.

Secondly the effects earthquakes have is to some great degree due to building regulations and whether directives are followed. Research is being done as to how to make buildings more resistant and it was found that cutting corners was the cause of so many deaths, not the magnitude of the earth quake itself.
