LOL - come to think of it, I HAVE seen several smiles, but they are always rather of an evil nature ;) For example, Caesar has asked for an augury to determine if his course in becoming dictator is correct. He then has a lovely little visit with the chief augur and makes him an appropriately expensive gift. When the augury is taken, they've brought all the right kinds of birds to the back yard and, at the right moment, release them to fly in the right quadrant, which results in a lovely smile from Caesar that rather freezes one's marrow bones.
Caesar has a great deal of irony in his lines, and one feels THAT, but humor? not really.
I agree, the warm, charming Caesar is not really there. However, I'm so delighted with the rest of the portrayal that I'm holding off final judgment for now. One thing that IS spot-on; when Hinds is on scene, almost everyone else (and these are actors with a lot of presence) fade off the screen.
