Bryce and my humble boney self have been talking about the mostly Mesoamerican calendars again and have decided to take upon us the challenge of really getting to understand these calendars up to the point that we can create some lovely graphic displays for our mainpage. The idea is to at least have a sundial, which is going to tell us the AW-time, a 260 and 365 day calendar, a Venus cycle and a Moon cycle.
This will probably take us a couple of years down the road. She says optimistically, but hey, we're going to see where and when we will end up.
First things first... the sundial
palenque's "decapitated" sundial The Maya divided their day into 13 "hours" of light and nine "hours" of night. For a long time I've been thinking about what happend to the other two hours and I couldn't figure it out, till recently I read something (sorry, can't remember where)that has led me to believe that these are the twilight hours of dusk and dawn. Thus we sit quite comfortable at 24 hours a day... Hurrah...
Now.. next questions:
What were these "hours" called?
What were the names of the 13 Lords of Heaven (Oxlahhun ti ku) and of the 9 Lords of the Underworld (Bolon ti ku)and can we trace their glyphs?
