It is reported that on seeing the gifts sent by the Romans, Graphix of the Aedui saw his wife's personal effects and burst into tears before flying into an uncontrollable rage.
Unfortunately, he did not consider the possibility that the his family was alive and instead took the gift as a tasteless provocation and a sign of the death of his family at the hands of Rome.
The messengers who brought the gifts were sent back minus their ears, tongues and noses.
