Thinking within the present format of South America, that of the Incan Empire, I like the idea of highlighting the places within the empire, especially since the Inca conquered a majority of the prior Pacific-Andean cultures.
The Chavin, the Mochica, the Nazca, the Huari/Wari, the Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku, the Chimu, and the Inca...what if we were to organize around them? Each receiving their own area, or "Cities" as the Hood layout terms them, and then within one or two of their great cities could be listed.
Then again North and Meso Americas are organized by geography. Three or four regions could be chosen to classify the area we're working with. Since the Incas are the central theme, perhaps their imperial organization is best, that of the provinces: Chinchasuyu, Antisuyu, Contisuyu, Collasuyu, and Qosqo (Cuzco).
The organization would then be something like such:
- Qosqo
- Chinchaysuyu - from northern Ecuador to the Nazca
- Cajamarca
- Chanchan
- Chavin
- Pachacamac
- Antisuyu - into the Amazonian jungles
- Contisuyu - the present-day Arequipa Region of Peru
- Collasuyu - south to the Rio Maule Region, south of present-day Santiago
It's a suggestion. I feel it works within the Inca outline but allows the exploration of the pre-Incan cultures of the region.
