Two days later, covered in a layer of grime, Labienus loped into New Carthage, Cottus on his tail, and noticed the sort of activity that always took place around an important official visit. Cities always took on a more festive appearance, as all those seeking favors, citizenship, and other sorts of perks turned out to show their best. Hirtius must have chosen to remain a few days longer.
Not knowing how he might be received by Hirtius, or for how long, Labienus sent Cottus off to find accommodation and stabling while he took himself off to take a bath and change. Regardles of what the outcome, Labienus had every intention of letting the locals know that he was now of Senator class, and a Pontifex. Within a few hours, shaven, oiled and wearing his Senatorial garb, he proceeded to the home where Hirtius had chosen to reside during his stay. Upon arriving, Labienus stalked up the steps, and glared down at the junior officer doing duty.
“ I need to see Aulius Hirtius. Is he receiving?”
