Socrates sluffs on the job Socrates was a stonecutter, that we do know, but what I would like to know is how he cut stone while he spent all day hanging around Athens preaching about Spartan Oligarthy. He obviously wasn't working, but instead hanging out with the boys, probably drinking and talking philosophy. Which leads me to the next aspect of Socrates' life.
Socrates Marries the Shrew This is interesting and I am sure it could be found in any dictionary worldwide, but in the tenth edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, one is able to find a description of Xanthipe and it is funny how she has been described throughout the ages.
Xanthippe: zan-'thi-pe,'ti shrewish wife of Socrates:(1691), an ill-tempered woman.
From what I have read, Socrates would leave her at home to tend to the kids while he went out waxing philosophic about the evils of Democracy(I have read he had somewhere around five kids.) I don't know about anyone else, but I am sure the ladies around here could back me up in saying, "No wonder she was a shrew!" A woman stuck at home all day with five screaming kids isn't a good combination for a healthy household. I am sure that is how most of the domestic violence cases are always showing up on the T.V. show "Cops" or something that Billy Collins would write about.
Apparently, Socrates didn't worry much about what was happening at home, or either he was too lazy to work so he developed a philosophy(5 Marx if someone can name another philosopher who did the same.)
Socrates Goes to War This is an interesting paradigm here is that while Socrates fought for the Athenian Military, he despised Athenian Democracy and spoke ill about it which eventually led to his death sentance. I am curious as to if his time served in the military had any effect on his later views and sarcasm directed towards the Athenian officials.
It is curious how Socrates has become almost deified in the philosophic world because of his rhetoric, but many tend to skip over his personal life.
