Is it just me, or is Gladiator the most historicaly inaccurate movie to ever win an Academy Award? Is it Bravehart, or perhaps something else? ...

The off duty Praetorians would wear togas but when on campaign withthe emperor they would wear uniforms no different from the regular units. In general, the costumes for Gladiator, for the men at least, were poorly designed. The purple uniforms for the Praetorians looked heavy and cumbersome.

The look of the buildings in Rome were what I found striking in the film. Commodus has his first meeing with the Senate at the basillica of Trajan, which was reconstructed fairly well.
