I will prove once and for all to these would-be optimates that he was indeed GOOD!!
Just kidding, you are right, based on the evidence we have. It can seemingly be argued either way. For my part, obviously, I think the "pro" arguments hold more water than any "cons."
Only look how he followed the constitution until they provoked him to do otherwise. Is that the ambition of a lunatic? No. "But he started a ten year holocaust in Gaul." And what noble Roman did not dream of such things under his belt? None. (Except maybe the Porcii Catones *snicker).
Anyway, I find every new fact fascinating. Hopefully I will be able to contribute something useful to the field of Caesar-study. My history major in school is proving my testing ground. So far, all my professors have been adamant that I draw 'new' conclusions from the evidence I gather (as much as an undergrad can, at any rate). So, with enough practice, I should be able to handle it.
When it gets to my dissertation time, you can be sure I will let you all know what I am up to. Hell, Ill probably need your help!!
As much as I admire the man, I'm much more deprecatory than glamorous...if only I could be like him. *sigh
