Caius Cassius Longinus, To Marcus Junius Brutus, Greetings:
I hope I am not too forward in writing this letter. I wished to convey my happiness and relief at the news of hearing that your cousin is to be returned safely home. I wished to express my earnest hopes that the pair of you will both be here in Rome soon, happily wed. I wished to reiterate once again my regrets, my apologies, and my immediate desire that we be reconciled.
Is it too much to ask, Brutus? We were such brothers, such good friends. Although I sometimes wronged you past enduring, I hope it was not past forgiving. I am utterly repentant of my conduct to you, and am on the rack daily with the guilt of all I have done, made worse by the torment of your cool, well-earned antipathy.
There are things to be done, to the glory of Rome. Rome was founded when one brother slew another. Romulus killed Remus, and sowed the fallow field of our as yet empty history with drops of blood that have grown to monstrous fruition. Let not Rome, in what may be it's final days, end with such another slaying, brother. Do not kill me with your hatred. Let us stand together, now. Gods know, I never meant to do you wrong. I never meant to make you ashamed. I wanted to make things right.
For your sake I am prepared to better myself; to give up the sins to which I have succumbed and check my anger when I know it is better to simply let you speak. For your sake and for that of Rome, for there is something amiss here, and something must be done. Your blood demands it, Brutus. Come back and fight!
In sincerity,
Cassius
