I agree with you both: Meier was a big disappointment to me also, and mostly on the same grounds: no notes, a bad pseudo-psychoanalysis, and a completely off description of Caesar's and Pompey's attitudes.
It is a pity that the best Caesar biographies are still Gelzer's and Carcopino's; I'm sure new material, new ways to work it, and new ways to look at it, could be used to write a great new bio!
