Nothing is wrong with you, Quintus. If you're not Australian, read The Thornbirds.

I've never gotten into McCullough's Rome either. Actually, I prefer ancient literature (The Satyricon, The Golden Ass) to McCullough. For a modern author's recreation, nothing beats Robert Graves' Rome as created in I, Claudius amd Claudius the God.
