Narses Phocas, Parakoimomenos, was unaccustomed to sitting in a prison cell. But, one goes where the prospects are. The Strategion was a venerable prison in the City of Constantine. Not surprisingly, the cell he was "visiting" was cold and damp and miserable. Its occupant was not hanging in chains, which was a nice touch of Christian compassion Narses thought whimsically. Narses' title had given him access. He espoused Christian charity as his motivation, which was not out of line with Byzantine virtues. "Good Christians are compelled to visit prisoners," he smiled to himself.
His target was one Quintus Symmachus, not a writer or statesman, but a not-so-common thief and pickpocket caught virtually in the act in the Forum Tauri. "It is amazing he is still alive," Narses thought to himself as he looked at the gaunt, nervous figure before him.
"How can I be of service, Kyrios?" Quintus bowed nervously. "I am a humble man brought here by misadventure and a poor sense of trusting my fellows...." "A sort of half-hearted apology," Narses thought. He looked down at the little book he had brought along on the off chance his visit would bear fruit.
"Quintus, I have in my mind a small enterpise for us. It requires a man of your special skills. You will also need to develop faniliarity with this work. It is an oneirokritis. Have you heard of it?"
"A book of dreams?" Quintus eyed the palace official in confusion.
"Aye, a book of dreams. Interpreting a noble's dreams aright may be a critical skill in a tight place. Interested?" Quintus could hardly refuse.
