    Tammuz may be recognizable to you as being the consort of Inanna. His name changes later on and becomes Dumuzi. He upsets Inanna by not mourning her passing into the underworld and she names him as her replacement. They also had a great love affair, but in later days, all the kings of Erech became associated with Inanna, the deity of that city.

    But, you may recognize the name from another source. In Judaism, the name Tammuz is given to a month (or two). It is either the 10th month of the civil year, or it can be the 4th month of the ecclesiastical year in the Jewish calendar.
