A couple of weeks later, another group of soldiers was being rotated out of service and a new group coming in. The new group arrived and was being welcomed by the ones already serving, including Chen. As introductions were being made, one man was being congratulated on his recent betrothal. Chen congratulated him too, and asked who the lucky lady was.
"She is the loveliest of all flowers in the province. Her name is Jai-Li," the other man responded joyfully.
Chen had to turn away quickly. He was in shock. Surely the man could not be talking about HIS Jai-Li?! But as he listened to more of the conversation with his back to the others, he realized that it was indeed the same girl. So many questions began to flood his mind. Has she forsaken him? Or is this an arrangement of her parents' making? Was she being forced into this? How could this have happened?
Chen felt powerless. His term of service would not end for another month. He had only one choice. He would have to sneak away one night soon and go to her. Chen was determined to discover the truth!
