Tenochtitlan was a large urban community. Girls were admonished against becoming gaudily dressed prostitutes prowling the markets; boys were told to stay away from the prostitutes' enticing ways. The frequency of the warnings in the texts against excessive gambling, drinking and sexuality indicates that ideal morality was hard to enforce in the crowded and heterogeneous populations of the city-states
