I recently ran across this article about Andronicus I Comnenus, written in a deliberately vivid, informal and "popular" style, by an experienced free-lance writer on historical and travel topics named Robert Wernick (who seems to have written extensively for Smithsonian, among other periodicals. Wernick's take on Andronicus is more positive than the one I am presenting in my own series of posts on him on this thread, but group members may find it interesting as well because of its distinctive style.
