Personally, I love this movie. I have found it indeed refreshing not being obliged to say every other minute "This is impossible!" (Does anyone remember the moment in Gladiator when Maximus erased his SPQR tatoo or when he kisses Marcus Aurelius' leg as he helps the emperor up the stirrup?)
I must, however, criticise the poor sculptures we have been shown. Those dreadful computer generated statues were infinitely less attractive than what Greek art was producing at the time and they actually seemed archaic in style, not Late Classical, as one would have expected them to be.
Even so, it still is one of the best historical movies I have seen so far. Let us hope we will have the chance to see others...
