I made this ballad myself, based on the old Danish/Swedish ballad fragment found in the Codex Runicus (see http://www.hum.ku.dk/ami/dream.html). The Codex is well post-Viking age (around 1300), but it's in runes for what that's worth - and the ballad fragment is the oldest surviving piece of written music found in Denmark. So naturally I made a ballad about a Viking raid out of it, to be sung to the original melody! Both myself and a Norwegian professor in medieval literature found my product to be in style with the genre of Scandinavian Medieval ballads as far as we could see.

Sadly, my group "Til Leiks" hasn't yet gotten around to make our "viking music" album yet. But the melody can be found on the Skalk CD "Viking Tones", among other places.

For those of you who don't understand Norwegian: Learn it! ;)

Drøymde meg ein draum i natt
    - Om silke og herleg pels
Drøymde meg så rik ein skatt
    - Sjå skip i austerveg
    - Bar dei heim gullringane raude

    Drøymde meg ein fager draum
    Snekkja lettleg gleid i straum

    Drøymde eg meg knarren stor
    Vigfus viking stod ved ror

Såg eg meg dei blanke sverd
    Økser kvild mot breian herd

Mot meg skein dei gilde skjold
    Geir-odd bleinka over voll

    Vikingflokk på vollen grøn
    Bar frå strandhogg sigers løn

    Såg eg viking, raustan kar
    Over brynja pels han bar

    Syntest herfang tungt og rikt
Sterke menn det bar til skip

    Drøymde unge trælars gråt
Trongt dei sat i lasta båt

    Drøymde knarren stolt og stor
Ned han sokk på tredje bord

    Heimferd over hav eg såg
Skip slo tungt i myrke våg

    Hepnad stor eg drøymde meg
    Heimkome frå austerveg

    Ringar tunge då dei vog
kvar og ein som åre drog

Drøymde meg ein draum i natt
    - Om silke og herleg pels
    Strandhogg gjævt og fager skatt
    - Sjå skip i Austerveg
    - Bar dei heim gullringane raude
