Interesting articles, PA, and it will take me a while to digest them. But I do see that there does seem to be enough evidence that Agricola got farther north than I thought.
I was aware of the printer’s error that changed Graupius into Grampius. My question had more to do with just how and when the modern Grampians came by their name. Thanks to Lepidina for clearing that up.
There may still be hope for finding the battle site one day. Certainly, no one ever expected for the site of Varus’ defeat in the Teutoburgerwald, yet it does seem to have been found. (The archaeologists still don’t want to commit themselves, but the evidence is mounting.) If the numbers of Caledonian dead were even one tenth of what Tacitus reported, there should be substantial evidence somewhere under the earth. While I am somewhat ambivalent about the UK’s metal detector policy, it has resulted in interesting finds since it was instituted. We may yet see the site of a large Roman-Briton battle from the right period.
