In celebration of WOMENS HISTORY MONTH, here's a list of interesting web
pages to further our understanding of the role(s) women played in our ancient societies.
Enjoy!!

- Much of what we think we know of women in prehistoric time is based on
surviving art. A
bibliography, including titles such as: Women's Work: The First
20,000 Years: Women, Cloth, and Society in Early Times (Barber), Myth
of the Goddess: Evolution of an Image (Baring & Cashford), and Women
in Prehistory (Ehrenberg).
- And excellent overview of Ancient
Women Warriors at About.com: "Ancient queens and other women who
led their people into battle: Amazons, Queen Artemisia, Queen Boudicca,
Queen Samsi, Queen Tomyris, Trung Sisters, Queen Zenobia."
- What does VENUS OF
WILLENDORF tell us about the women of prehistory? Christopher L. C. E.
Witcombe includes an exploration into Stone-Age Women and the Earth Mother -
Mother Goddess (is it a myth?).
- A bibliographical
listing of over 330 articles with links to their FULL TEXT, covers
everything from erotica to goddess worship (with a heavy emphasis on
Greek/Roman history).
- An online presentation of Women
and Gender in Ancient Egypt, derived from live exhibit at the Kelsey
Museum of Archeology, includes interpretive essays and images.
- Selected papers from the Boone Conference of Exploring
Gender Through Archeology have been reprinted, and include a wide range
of topics and several discussions about prehistoric women in the Americas.
- Women and
Women's Communities in Ancient Japan, in this beautifully written site
looks at "... the history of women in ancient Japan is, [and] like so
much else in early Japanese history, [is] filled with missing parts. We know
very little about Japan before the advent of writing, so piecing together
women's lives and contributions to early Japanese history is as difficult as
piecing together the lives and histories of the early Japanese."
- And, last, but not least, explore the world of the Amazons,
where you can decide if ".. there [is] more behind these famous warrior
women than mere Fantasy ? Join in a virtual archaeological expedition to
fathom this mysterious myth!"
