I understand what you mean about the book... but I'm enjoying it anyhow. Pressfield isn't the best writer I've ever read, but I do think his writing style is unique and therefore very interesting to read.

Also, I didn't pay a lot of attention to the discussions about the book before I read it, so I didn't have all that many expectations that it could ruin... mostly I just stumbled across it at my library and decided to read it. I think that can make a big difference.
