    There is one difference between the Greek Dark Ages and the later European DA. We know that literacy was kept alive by the Church (who hoarded the skill to assist consolidation of power) and, of course, scholars of the Arabian and Persian courts.

    We don't actually know whether literacy disappeared during the Greek Dark Ages - we only know that there is no literary evidence from that time.

    One is a kind of darkness from within and the other a darkness from without. :-)
