Your post has chastened me. I will try to behave more like someone who hasn't been here for a while. But I do blame MTV in general. And Beavis and Butthead in particular.
The only axe I recall from my foggy recollection of Middle English poetry is in Sir Gawain, not Sir Topas. As I recall, Sir Gawain encountered a chap bent on spoiling Christmas, and cut his head off.
There's a lesson in that for all of us.
