After breakfast today, we headed for the Barkhor, a section of the oldest part of Lhasa that bustles with marketplace activity and religious devotion. The 1,300 year old Jokhang Temple, situated at one end of the bazaar is one of Tibet’s most sacred sites. Pilgrims make clockwise circuits on their hands and knees in reverence to this sacred site. Thousands of yak-butter candles flicker inside beneath the enlightened gaze of the golden Jowo Sakyamuni, the 7th century Buddha statue that the temple was built to house. First we’ll visit the bazaar and then the temple.
And now we will visit the sacred Jokhang Temple.
