On the morning of September 29th we disembarked to visit Shibaozhai village and famous red pagoda. No bus transfer was required for this shore excursion since it was a walk of only 15 minutes along a steady path that included some stairs to the pagoda and then approximately 100 stairs to reach the Daoist temple at the top of Jade Seal Hill. The charming 12-story pagoda is considered one of the marvels of traditional Chinese architecture. The wooden structure was built to lean against a natural rock cliff on the north bank of the river and provides for a unique panorama of the Yangtze. Not a single nail was used in its original construction during the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the seventeenth century. Some of the surrounding village has already been submerged by the rising water from the dam construction and by 2009 only the pagoda will remain, forming a small island in the river.

This is what the pagoda will look like in 2009 after the river has risen to its full height and the pagoda has become an island.
