Wooden funerary mask, 18th dynasty
I find much of Egypt's art, sculpture and even engraved heiroglyphs to be so beautiful as to inspire awe, well at least in me. Gazing at the work of the ancients has always been the draw for me to lands like Egypt. The stunning art of Funerary masks are my particular favorite, they make me think more than any other style of art.. who was this person? how did they live?
Famous mask of TutankhamunFrom the famous Fayoum paintings on wood to the solid gold death masks of Tutankhamun and Amenhotep, choosing my favorite would be hard to do. I wonder when the first known funerary mask was made? Any of you Egyptologists that know, please share! Also any of you with information, images and/or links to sites covering the other various funerary arts in ancient Egypt please share as I think I'm not the only one with a fascination for it.
