The Xiling Gorge is the first of the three gorges going upstream. It is also the longest one stretching from the Nanjin Pass of Yichang City in Hubei province westward to the mouth of the Stream of Fragrance in Hubei. It’s total length is approximately 40 miles.

Before the 1980s, the Xiling Gorge had been well known for its number of dangerous shoals and swift torrents, however, since the completion of the Gezhouba Dam, they no longer exist.

Another characteristic of the Xiling Gorge is that it has many small gorges in it. During this phase of the cruise we spent most of our time on the top deck taking in the fabulous scenery.
