This was an ancient Greek form of nourishment somewhere between solid food and pure liquid. It is best known as the ritual beverage at the Eleusian Mysteries. It was very popular with the Greek peasants. It was a porridge like substance. Made of barley meal and water, it could be given flavor by adding herbs, such as pennyroyal, mint, or thyme. It was a very frugal dish and was said to posses medicinal properties.
It was a popular rustic brew from which the upper classes abstained.
