Moravius has, I believe, been trying to impress upon us the difficulty of understanding the Roman religion after two thousand years of being influenced by the Christian Church in our appreciation of it.
In Moravius' opinion (correct me if i'm wrong, I'm just trying to summarize), the Romans had a personal interaction with their gods, both with the great gods who protected Rome and with the domestic gods who cared for their homes, their families and their daily activities.
The fact that they mostly did not have ecstatic ceremonies, and were quite decorous in their worship does not mean that they did not invest emotionally in the religion.
Of course we have not considered here that all Romans were not believers, and as today there were numbers of people who din't have religious practices, or din't believe in the gods, or did not believe they cared.
How about we move on to another topic?
