Khafre = "appearing like Re".
In the literature, he is also known as Chefren.
Khafre was a son of the great Khufu. Another son, Djedefre, ruled prior to his own kingship. Khafre built the Second Pyramid, so-called because it is the second-largest of all the pyramids. His was a prosperous reign, as evidenced in part by the well-built mortuary structures of his time.
While his pyramid was smaller than that of his father, it appeared larger, as it was built up on a hillside, making it seem taller. Nearby is the Sphinx, also built under Khafre's reign.
