Named for the community in Attica where the sacred dramas were first presented, they are generally belived to have been founded by Eumolpos. Because of their excellence these Mysteries spread to Rome and Britain. They are famous for the beauty of their philosopy and the high standards of morality they represent.
They are the mystic interpretation of Nature's most precious secrets. They honor Ceres (Demeter, Rhea, or Isis) and her daughter, Persephone.
The Rites of Eleusis are divided between the Lesser and Greater Mysteries. The Lesser were celebrated in the spring at the time of the vernal equinox in the town of Agrae. The Greater in the fall at the time of the autumnal equinox at Eleusis and Athens.
