I haven't been able to find a mention on the board of The Year 1000 by Danny Danziger and Robert Lacey (link opens in new window). Has anyone else here read this?
It's probably a tertiary source, more than a secondary source. I can't vouch for its accuracy (it's been two years since I read it), and its tone isn't quite academic, but it's an interesting and entertaining read, and provides a generalized worldview for Anglo-Saxon England. It's not a substitute for the work of period specialists. It IS a great introduction to the period.
I also have the pertinent volume of Simon Schama's History of Britain, but I'm sad to say that I haven't read it yet! I'll have to remedy that, and talk about it here when I'm done.
